Phish 10/27/14 Bill Graham Civic recap
Nov. 6th, 2014 01:51 pmI wrote this last Tuesday about the 10/27/14 Phish show at the Bill Graham Civic in SF. We weren't able to find childcare and I was kind of scrambling for someone to go with me, and I and a friend who could go but she hurt her knee Sunday night and could;t go and in the 11th hour I found someone else. Yay!

Last night's show was simply epic. It just kept coming at us and barely slowed down, but when it did those moments were divine as well. I saw one person describe it as an onslaught and that is a pretty good descriptor of what happened last night, in the best way possible. Crowd and band energy was at a peak--I am not sure I've seen either of the two so intense. I am quite sore today from all the dancing I did. The light grid looked similar to last year's, with maybe a few changes, but still distinctly different than 2012's. Lights were the amazing lights we expect.
Setlist:
Set 1: Walfredo, Ocelot > Camel Walk, Axilla, Rift, 555, Maze, Brian and Robert, Stash, Party Time, 46 Days
Set 2: Sand > Birds of a Feather, Waiting All Night, Ghost > Bug > Seven Below > I Didn't Know, Chalk Dust Torture, Also Sprach Zarathustra > Slave to the Traffic Light
Encore: Take Me Out to the Ballgame[1], Winterqueen, A Day in the Life
OK, so opening with the first Walfredo since 2010 pretty much set it up for the evening it was. Starting with some tuning which I saw someone note as a nod to the Dead and it certainly felt that way. Walfredo was done with Trey on boards, Fishman on bass, Mike on guitar, and Page on drums. It was sweet. After switching back to their regular instruments they played a a gorgeous Ocelot. Then things started to really pick up and get funky with Camel Walk. And then, Axilla happened. I love Axilla, always, but this one took it up a notch...so good, so driving, so strong...audience was going nuts. Rift continued that high energy drive beautifully then the funk got bumped up with 555. Maze was a fun Maze with Page's solo tweaked to be a little grittier and funkier than some other Maze's I've seen. Had the Maze lights I enjoy too. Brian and Robert was quite lovely, but I really had to use the bathroom so I had to miss some of it. Some dude in the hall was heckling people who left during it to use the bathroom (Of course, WTF was he doing in the hall if it was such an issue), but we gotta pee sometime during the show. Then Stash! I love Stash, I love the slow build and the ins and outs of the Stash journey. At 10:19 it was the longest song in the first set (with Maze and Ocelot close seconds) and the jam flowed nicely. Party Time sent the crowd over the top because it was, indeed, PARTY TIME. Closed set one with a really sweet, high energy, and funky, though not particularly long, 46 Days.
Set 2 opened with a nicely funky Sand. The jam transitioned to Birds of a Feather kind of oddly and harshly, to me, but I don't know if that is a typically thing that I am just not familiar with. It was just kind of jarring and I didn't feel like Sand was quite done. But BoaF was SWEET. And funky. Very funky evening all around. Sweet and slow Waiting All Night gave us a breather. Then Ghost. WHAT WAS UP WITH THAT GHOST?!!! I've seen it described as crazytown, spooky, and dirty. it was all of those and then some. It was weird but then really good. Great jam, and at 16:36 it was the longest song of the evening. I felt my personal energy starting to lag mid-Ghost jam and sat down and was worried I wouldn't be able to rally for the rest of the show. I was WRONG as the Ghost jam segued to Bug and that was all I needed to be back on my feet dancing again. I love Bug and this was a great Bug, and my first Bug, IIRC. Then Seven Below which was nice, but didn't stand out for me too much last night. Then they busted out I Didn't Know which put me in a super happy place as I love anything they do a cappella. The electrolux made its appearance courtesy of Fish, as per usual. Fast and furious, but short, Chalk Dust Torture continued the second set frenzy. I love a fast and driving CDT and I got it. And then, just when I thought I was all jaded and over 2001 (I know it is really called Also Sprach Zarathustra, but I always think of it as 2001) they blew me away with one. I danced so hard to those grooves, along with ~5,000 other people. That was some serious 2001 action. Closed set 2 with Slave to the Traffic Light which was a softer, slower closer than I was expecting, but pretty.
They came out pretty quickly for the encore and started it off with at quick instrumental Take Me Out to the Ballgame in honor of the Giants....the fans appreciated the nod. Then a lovely Winterqueen...that may be one of my favorites of the new stuff. Then I got a little blown away and full of nostalgia with their A Day in the Life show closer.
That was A SHOW! Still reeling. So, so happy I was able to make it. I love seeing them at BGC and I had so much fun.
Until Vegas my friends!
