Photo of the Day for 02/14/16: Snowy River
As I have mentioned before, the mist and light in Yosemite when we were there last month was really incredible. It was most stunning on our walk on the Lower Yosemite Falls trail, along the Merced River. The filtered light worked really well with the snow and water. I shot this on our walk that day.

Photo of the day for 02/05/16: Sunset Flight on the Waves
Peter and I spent New Year's Day poking around the shoreline of Half Moon Bay which was windy, cold, and beautiful. One of my favorite things is watching pelicans fly along the tops of waves, just as these three are doing here. Approaching sunset we had some really nice light that made both the water and sky glow in places.

Winter, especially in a drought year, is an interesting time to shoot as there are lots of dry and barren things around, and shape/lines become more prominent as color becomes less so. When I was at Ardenwood with the kids in December of 2014 I noticed this curved piece of bark on the ground and thought it was intriguing in both its shape and pattern.

Photo of the Day for 02/03/16: Fallen, Standing, Snowy
On our first day in Yosemite a few weeks ago we walked the Lower Yosemite Falls loop trail. Walking that trail in snow and ice was very different than the other times we have walked it (summer and drier winters). I have mentioned before how stunning the mist and light was that day, and I think this photo captures some of that. No mist here, but really great light that resulted in amazing color. I have shot many a redwood and rarely gotten color this great. This was to the side of the trail and I was intrigued by the fallen tree trunks juxtaposed with the standing trees.

I took the kids to the SF Zoo a couple summers ago and they noticed how close we were to the beach and were not going to pass up a chance to visit so we ended up at Ocean Beach in the late afternoon/early evening for a while. It was a fun visit and a rare warmish day there. There were also these velellas all over the sand and I was fascinated by them.

Photo of the Day for 1/22/16: Spring in Sunol
This is another from Joe's workshop in Sunol last March. It had rained some earlier in the day and that gave way to really nice light with the semi-overcast sky. I thought this tree was quite interesting, with its shape and bumpy branches. This shot was originally an outtake from that workshop but it has grown on me and, as usual, I always find more when I revisit my photos after some time.

Photo of the Day for 01/12/16: Crane Trio

The Port of Oakland is home to giant shipping container cranes, cranes that I always imagined to be Imperial Walkers, long before I had heard the myth/legend that they had inspired Lucas in his design of the Imperial Walkers in Empire (he has denied the connection). I have driven by the cranes thousands of times, and they are very much part of the East Bay skyline. We generally only see them from one perspective, but riding the ferry to San Francisco we get them see them much more up close and personal. Here is a shot of them from a ferry ride in November of 2015.

Photo of the Day for 1/11/16: Red Fox

A new resident fox at Sulphur Creek Nature Center in Hayward, the only red fox they have. They do wildlife rescue and rehab and release animals back into the wild once they are healed. Sometimes the animals they have rehabbed are not able to go back out either because they are disabled in some way, are too familiar with humans for whatever reason, etc. Those animals, like this fox, live at the center under the care of wonderful staff. I shot this in August of 2015 while S. was attending their "Critter Care" wildlife day camp.
