lens woes

My 18-55mm lens broke on vacation. Not an epic fell on rocks breaks or dropped in the ocean break, it just stopped working. The shutter won't work when it is set to auto focus. It will shoot when switched to manual but i cannot get a clear focus that way. Super frustrated to be missing that range and I cannot decide if I should try to get it repaired or buy a new lens (it is not a very expensive lens and I fear sinking much money into it on a doomed repair mission), and if I *do* buy a new lens, then I would want to spend the money on a lens with that range but a different lens But that means more money. BUT, I don't want to buy anymore EF-S lenses as I plan to upgrade to a full frame in a year or two. ARGH! Frustrated and don't really want to make a decision about this, but I actually need to be able to shoot between 22 and 50mm which is what I currently lack.
