2012 was a very, very, busy year for me, for our family, and for Big Moves/emFATic DANCE.

Here is a brief round-up of some of the more fun/travel/entertainment-oriented things that I/we did.

I hiked to the top of Mission Peak (and back down, and then went to rehearsal).

We (our family) to a summer vacation to Lassen Volcanic National Park where we spent three days enjoying the mountain air and trees. We hiked the Bumpass Hell Trail where we saw amazing geothermal features and also did some of the Ridge Lakes Trail, the Cold Boiling Lake Trail, and poked around Manzanita lake and Sulphur Works. Hiking at 8,000+ feet was a new experience for all of us. In addition to the time we spent in the national park, we walked through a lava tube in Lassen National Forest and visited Burney Falls which was amazing. On part two of our summer vacation, we went to the railroad museum in Sacramento and generally poked around old town.

At the very end of the year we took a trip to Monterey which included two trips to Monterey Bay Aquarium (we had bought a membership earlier in the year), a trip out to Point Lobos State Reserve which was gorgeous, a visit to Point Pinos Lighthouse, the 17-mile drive which included an amazing an invigorating stop at Spanish Bay, and New Year's Eve at sunset at Asilomar State Beach.

In addition to our small vacations, had numerous visits to the Oakland Zoo, Children's Discovery Museum in San Jose, Ardenwood Farm, Coyote Hills, Don Edwards, CuriOdyssey, Palo Alto Junior Museum and Zoo, Crab Cove, various local playgrounds, the county fair, LEGO brick shows, The Nutcracker Sweets, Zoo Lights at the Oakland Zoo, Christmas in the Park, and Holiday Lights at Gilroy Gardens.

We've been on many walks, hikes, and bike rides this year.

Peter and I went to a Phish show at the Bill Graham Civic in August and it was AMAZING. I had never been to the Bill Graham Civic and thoroughly enjoyed it as a venue for Phish. The show itself was really great and now that we live in the future I was able to download it the next day so I can relive it. Their light design is like no other, and was particularly strong during Maze and 2001. We also went to the Bridge School Benefit together in October and while it was all pretty stellar (with the exception of Guns n Roses), Jack White was the epic highlight for me and I wish I could have seen him headline a show this year. In addition to White, I loved Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, K.D. Lang, Sarah MacLachlan, and Ray LaMontagne. And Eddie Vedder showing up to do a couple of songs thrilled me to pieces, and he hilled it.

I attended my third
NOLOSE conference and Peter attended some of it with me. We spent our first night away from the kids there, at the EconoLodge, where the conference has been held for the past three years, the old swinger's hotel that was previously know as the Edgewater. The conference itself was challenging and emotional as always, but also very wonderful and fulfilling. I performed and read there this year...I was busy. But I also hung out, swam, shopped, ate, and went to workshops. It was good.

That was 2012 in travel, music, and fun. A good year for this stuff, overall.

Note on the Civic: on the sides, in the balcony, in the first couple rows, there are pockets of EXTRA WIDE SEATS. These seats transform my BGC concert going experience, but for GA shows you have to get there super early to snag one. I was at the venue over the holidays, and had requested one of these for accessible seating - ended up in an armless in the wheelchair section instead, because they "couldn't" restrict access to the wide seats, only the designated accessible sections. But if you can manage to snag one, *heaven* for a jam band show.

I've been pondering how best to approach the venue to ensure access to these seats for the people they were obviously intended to accommodate.

Yeah, there was one of those seats right in front of me. It looked way more comfortable than the one I was in, which hit the sides of my size 16 hips. That sucks that they do not reserve them for folks who actually need them, as the other seats would be really really difficult for anyone much bigger then me.
