I am routinely astounded by the sheer amount of produce this family goes through in one week. I always think I am buying too much but then it is *gone*.
I fear for your teen years, too. I was just relating to someone how, one year, when both boys were teens, I received a Christmas present from the manager of Safeway: a personal note from her and a $100 gift certificate.
This screamed, "You have spent way too much money at the grocery store."
Yeah, and they are three years apart which means they will be teenagers together. Seriously, the burn rate of food around here blows me away sometimes. S. is a berry hound and one day we have berries, then poof, gone!
S. is just 4.5, so he doesn't cook, but he helps me cook and he certainly does basic food prep for himself like washing fruit, getting his own cereal, etc.
