"...appeared stoic but had something inevitible about her."
--Rita Felciano, dance critic for the SF Bay Guardian, describing me in Chris Black's "...the sum of its parts"

It is still hard to comprehend that this was said about me. I am amused/bemused/flattered at the description. I am also relieved. I was worried about what the critic would have to say and on the whole I am pleased. I am also pleased that I appropriately projected what I was supposed to project. What is most interesting to me is that stoicism is by far not my performance default. I have had to work hard to shed the automatic "dance studio smile" when dancing on stage and adopt more dynamic facial expressions. It is also more of a challenge for me to perform in a piece and project stoicism, thoughtfulness, or sadness than it is for me to perform in a piece where I get project happiness, sexiness, fun, fierceness, anger, frustration etc.--I guess the more subtle emotions are harder for me to perform. In short, I've had to learn to be a much better actor. It is also more difficult for me to be internally focused on stage than it is to be externally focused. Save for a few moments, Chris' piece required me to be highly internally focused which was a challenge, but one which I think I tackled very well. I am very happy with all of our performances last weekend, and the reviewers had excellenet things to say about my fellow dancers as well.

I sent my parents the review (they saw the show on Saturday night) and my dad replied:
    Stoic but inevitable? My daughter.....?

It was a good review. Who is this Rita lady?
I think she understood the show (maybe more than your old man) and I think it is a good review.
Of course it was a good show as long as you're not a conservative Republican with weight issues...

    Keep on truckin'...

    love,
    the old man

I was amused. And, I assume by "weight issues" my dad meant "issues with fat people", given the content of the show.
