My brain feels stuck regarding updating, so this was a nice and fun exercise:
- bisexual:
I'm bi and have identified as some variant of queer since I was 14. For many years now I have read about and studied bisexuality--yes, I am a queer studies geek. I was president of a GLBT student group at my undergraduate university and I was a peer-group facilitator for a bisexual discussion/support group at a community queer center for a few years. - contact improv:
This is a form of dance where, as the name implies, one improvises while in contact or through making contact with others. I had never heard of it until I started doing modern dance nearly four years ago. A lot of modern choreographers use contact improv as part of their creation process and some of the most interesting modern pieces I have seen have been deeply rooted in contact improv. - fat!so?:
Marilyn Wann's book, zine and web site. I read the book shortly before I got involved with Big Moves and it helped me process a lot of things that were going on inside my head about body image, fat, and society. Fat!So? and Wann's honesty and unapologetic assault on fat-phobia were catalysts for some major changes in my life around body-image and self-acceptance. - independent film:
Most major Hollywood movies leave me cold. I really enjoy good, captivating independent films. I'm a sucker for a great documentary or a really quirky slice of life film. - love and rockets:
Oh, I've loved this band since I was thirteen. My boyfriend at the time and I used to listen to them all the time--"Earth, Sun, Moon" was a soundtrack to the beginning of my freshman year of high school. I still have the copy of that tape that boyfriend made me and I have the self-titled "Love and Rockets" on vinyl. I saw them with my ex-husband back in 1996 and loved every minute of it. - neil young:
My dad has loved him for years. I still remember my dad getting the "Trans" album for Christmas back in the early eightes and the bizarre electronic version of "Mr. Soul" on it. I also enjoy Neil's music, though not as much as my dad. I respect Neil's refusal to accept corporate sponsorship and I appreciate his political music. I love his and his wife's annual Bridge School Benefit not just for what they are doing, but also because it is consistently one of the most amazing and interesting musical events around. - political satire:
"The Daily Show" and Jon Stewart pretty much sums this one up. Al Franken is great as well. - reading:
Um, yeah. I love novels, magazines, cookbooks, newspapers, books of essays, books of theory and analysis, short stories, blogs--I love to read. I always have a few books going and magazine articles I am working on as well. Without something to read I feel lost. - sunflowers:
Anyone who knows me knows I love sunflowers. Growing up they grew wild all over the vacant lots and fields of my hometown. We grew them in our garden when I was a small child and for the past nine years I have been growing them, and photographing them, whenever I get the chance. Sunflowers were the major flower at our wedding, seed packets were the favors, and the graphic on our program was based on one of my sunflower photos. - wildflowers:
I love seeing flowers all over the hillsides and fields growing wild. I love discovering new to me wildflowers (like fireweed and blue poppies in Alaska) and photographing them. Wildflowers are a thing of great beauty.
