Well, after months of anticipation the baby elephant was finally born at the Oakland Zoo. Here is a pic of the baby: http://www.oaklandzoo.org/news/pr/index.html

My sister is a keeper at the zoo and she went to the press conference today and she told me the baby is nursing well, which is good. I am glad that the baby is doing fine so far and the mother is mostly accepting it. I was worried something was going to go terribly wrong with the birth--I know things can still go wrong, but at least he is nursing. And he is *fat*. My sis says that the mother is a couple *thousand* pounds overweight and she put on over 700 lbs during the pregnancy. The baby weighed over 300 lbs at birth, and typically elephants weight 200 at birth.

Well, I must get back to my office cleaning chore.

R. said that the mom and baby will be off display for a while and she doesn't know when they will be back on. It kind of depends on how well the baby does I think. However, she says to continue checking the Oakland Zoo Web site as there were _thirty_ rolls of film shot yesterday of the baby and mom and the keepers plan to post the pics as they have the time.
