too terrible to be true...but it is

So I woke up this morning to the phone ringing. I typically never would have answered the phone at a little after 7am, especially without checking the caller ID, but I did today. It was my mom, telling me two planes had been hijacked and flown into the WTC, a third hit the Pentagon, and all airports in the US were being shut-down. I couldn't believe it--I still can't, even after watching hours of news footage of it happening. I woke M. up, told him what happened and stayed on the phone with my mom for a long time, as we watched the news together, though physically apart. M. decided he wasn't going to go in to work at Moffett Field, and shortly after we learned that all employees like him were being put on administrative leave today. I tried calling B. before he left for work, but couldn't get ahold of him. I was watching local news and I saw SF pretty much being shut-down and San Jose police looking for car bombs. I decided I wasn't going to school as I couldn't concentrate and there was not a snowball's chance in hell I was going to sit in one of the taller buildings in downtown SJ while there were still 50 some-odd planes in route. I discovered classes were cancelled today, anyhow. I got ahold of B. at work just as he was preparing to leave. He works for the govt. as well, but in Berkeley, and he was *not* going to stick around in his building today. My uncle, who is on an oil tanker, was located today and is still in Mississippi, presumably safe. As is my other uncle who is now stranded in New Mexico--he was supposed to be flying back to the bay area today.

It is my parents' 30th wedding anniversary today. My paternal grandparents' wedding anniversary was the bombing of Pearl Harbor.

My maternal grandparents are quite upset as it reminds them so much of Pearl Harbor.

As for me, I am just shocked beyond words. I do not think anyone here at work is actually working. The CEO sent an email out letting people know they are free to go home if they need to. We also have CNN live feed on our intranet, and it appears we are all watching/listening to it.

It appears we are going to be in real all-out war.
