Attention Everyone!
Big Moves needs your help. Got $5, $10, $15 to spare? That's all we are asking.
If each one of my lj friends donates just $5 to Big Moves we will have almost enough money to make the theater rental down payment (due mid-January) for Bodies in Motion 2003 (October '03)
Bodies in Motion is our professional dance concert that is in its third year. This concert is unique in that it showcases large dancers and isses of body image in dance. The past two years Canada's Big Dance have headlined with Fat Chance Belly Dance opening. Last year Big Moves commissioned a local choreographer to create piece to open the show. The piece, "They'll Eat the Fat Ones First" featured the Big Moves dancers (including me in the lead role) and dealt directly with being fat in our society. For 2003, we are commissioning two pieces from two different local choreographers, Fat Chance Belly Dance will be back, and Larry Goldhuber, a fat dancer from New York, will be headlining.
We are fervently going after any grants we possibly qualify for and we are having our big fundraiser in February, but we need cash now to make the payment in January. I know many of you can't come to our events, but you can still help us out. Our goal is to have a national presence in the next 5-10 years, so we won't always be just a SF Bay organization.
I also know many of you are totally strapped and cannot spare the cash. I totally understand (I can't spare money either). However, if you can spare the cash (any amount) please go to our donation's page for instructions on how to donate. We accept online payments, as well as snail mail payments. All donations are tax-deductible as we are a fiscally sponsored program of Intersection for the Arts.
Any donation amount will get you a spiffy thank-you letter signed by all four board members (hey, we aren't famous now, but we may be someday) and our undying gratitude. Donations of $20 or more gets you our newsletter; $50 or more gets you our newsletter plus one free pass a class of your choice; $100 gets you all that plus a T-Shirt; $250 dollars gets you all that plus a complimentary pass to Bodies in Motion 2003; $500 gets you all the aforementioned goodies plus an additional complimentary ticket to Bodies in Motion 2003, and an autographed copy of Laurie Toby Edisons groundbreaking photo collection, Women En Large.
Oh, yeah, we are completely volunteer-run, with the exception of non-Big Moves' teachers whom we do pay. All board members are currently non-paid, as are the teachers from Big Moves.
You may be asking yourself, why is Big Moves important? Well, other than the fact that I am assistant director and dance with the Phat Fly Girls, the Big Moves Dancers, and the Original Fat Bottom Revue, Big Moves is important because of the work we are doing. We are the nation's only service organization dedicated to increasing size-diversity in the world of dance. We currently have two ongoing hip hop classes, and one jazz dance class. We recenly had an aerial dance workhop and we have a modern dance series coming up. All these classes are taught by size-postive and fat-friendly teachers and focus on helping people of any size feel good abour dancing in their bodies. We also produce shows, and host performing companies. We work to educate the mainstream dance world about issues of body-image and size-diversity (or lack thereof). In short, we are doing what no one else has dared to do--explicity challenge and fight against the dance world's size-discrimination not just as fat dancers, but also as fat teachers, producers of fat-postive shows, and educators.
