I actually helped instigate this :) I encourage all of you to participate because it will be a very cool art experiment and a cool show of solidarity (Marilyn will list all participants' names and cities if they so wish on the web site.

Hey:

Have you ever wanted to do something just because it was silly and fun, then realized that it might also be important? I'm writing to you about an idea like that, in the hope that you'll want to join in.

Here's how it started...

A while ago, I was at the dress rehearsal for a modern dance concert. Backstage, dancers were getting into costume, warming up, doing their stage makeup. My fellow dancer Jessica and I noticed we were both wearing the same, unusual color of panty. Jessica said, "I see you got the memo." I said, "Yup."

It might have ended there. But Marina said, "What memo?" So I said, "You know, the memo that tells all women everywhere what color panties to wear that day." Then the beauty of such a thing hit me. It was like Christo wrapping the Reichstag. Only subtle and invisible and monumental and fun.

What if women (and men) everywhere all wore the same color panty on the same day? It would be the most beautiful art installation ever. No one could see it. Everyone could create it.

"When should we do it? What day?" I asked. We quickly ruled out all the major holidays. Carol said, "What about the first Monday in October? It's opening day of the Supreme Court session." Then it wasn't just about beauty any more, it was about freedom. How cool is that?

I really hope you'll join me in wearing red panties a week from Monday. First, because it will be beautiful. Second, because reproductive choice is at risk right now. Just imagine what it will be like if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. Of course, you can get involved with the National Abortion Rights Action League. But you can also wear the red panties, because...

Whether or not you can change the world, you *can* change your panties!
