because being sick wasn't enough

cassidyroseLast night someone either tried to break into our house, or they just decided to tear a big hole in our screen with a sharpened broom handle.
Yeah, fun.
I opened the downstairs' windows at about 9pm-ish last night. We were awake and moving about the house, and at about 11:30 we were cold and I asked![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
catzen to close the windows and that is when he discovered a broken off broom or shovel handle shoved through one of the screens--about 6 inches of it was inside the house. We looked where the hole was and it was slightly below the level of the shrubbery (which is very close to the windows), so we decided it has to be intentional.
We called the police and filed a report. The police officer said it was definitely intentional and it was either vandalism, or someone trying to break-in.
Just lovely.
I am wanting to believe it was vandalism, but my mom thinks someone was trying to rip through the screen to break-in, realized people were home and then fled. We saved he broom handle to show our landlord and the homeowner's association.
So, we now have a huge hole/rip in our screen and we are both spooked. Yuck. I haven't had anything like this happen before--it is a rather unpleasant feeling. I am also upset that I didn't hear anything.
We are both still sick and my cramps are bad. I plan on going back to work tomorrow--I hope I feel better. Thanks to everyone who has sent well-wishes and get-well vibes.

Did the police officer have any advice for what to do differently now that you know someone's casing your place?
At least whoever it is is stupid. Anyone who tries to break into a dwelling without first checking whether it's occupied is definitely a few cards short of a full deck.
Still, keeping a cellphone by the bed wouldn't be amiss.
