banded argiope

Yesterday,
ptor and I went for a walk at dusk at Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge. As always, we enjoyed seeing the birds (ducks, gulls, egrets, and others) and the plant life. However, our biggest find of the day was a large spider in a web which I had never seen before. We have identified it as a argiope trifasciata, common name, banded argiope. I got a couple of decent pictures--I had no tripod on me and it was nearly dark by the time we saw the spider so the pictures have a flash and aren't great, but kind of cool all the same.
