My Uncle Billy likes to make all sorts of things, and one of the things he does is repurpose old items and create something new from them. One project of his recently has been making these decorative windmills/weather vanes out of old bicycle tires. He made this one for S. for his birthday and it lives in our garden oscillating in the wind while the wheel turns. I captured this right after it rained last week.

In August of 2014 we spent a few days in a cabin in the Mineral King area of Sequoia National Mark. Mineral King is very remote. There are pockets of bits of generator-produced electricity, but otherwise everything is propane, if anything at all. The only route into Mineral King by car is a long slog (~90 minutes) up a ~one lane mountain road that isn't even paved in some parts. And that was after driving all the way to Sequoia. Anyhow, we had a nice time and enjoyed exploring, though the elevation was rough for all of us. On one of our hikes that took us into a designated wilderness area I spotted this grasshopper balancing on some grass.
