1. What is your lineage? Where are your ancestors from?

My dad's mother was Portuguese from the Azores; my great-grandparents came from the Azores and settled in the central valley with their children. My dad's dad came from Texas to California in the dust bowl (very Grapes of Wrath, and his family had come from England long ago. We've been able to discern that he was Irish, English, and Cherokee.

My mom's mother is all Irish. Her family came from Ireland and settled in Michigan where they worked in the coal mines. They eventually made it out to Montana, then California. My mom's father is Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and Prussian (German). There is some speculation that there may be a tiny bit of African-American as well, but we do not know for certain either way. Before making it to San Francisco, my great-grandfather's family lived in Missouri.

So, Ireland and the Azores are the two places where most of my ancestors are from. Overall, I am more Irish than anything else, with Portuguese a strong second.

2. Of those countries, which would you most like to visit?

Ireland and the Azores. Our Irish hertiage is failry well mapped, so I'd really like to go there and visit. I am also awed buy the beauty of Ireland. Oh, and we have a family castle in Scotland--that'd be cool to see. I am second generation from the Azores, so there are still a number of people there whom I am failry closely related to. I'd really like to visit the Pico, the island my family came from.

3. Which would you least like to visit? Why?

Hmmm..I want to go to all of them and there are not that many to chose from. I guess I'd least like to visit Texas which is where my dad's father was from.

4. Do you do anything during the year to celebrate or recognize your heritage?

Not really. St. Patrick's Day is kind of a big deal on my mom's side of the family in that it holds meaning for us in terms of our heritage. Otherwise, the closest I get is perhaps eating some Portuguese sweet bread.

5. Who were the first ancestors to move to your present country (parents, grandparents, etc)?

My paternal grandfather's ancestors. This is the part of the family that has some Cherokee, so they'd win in terms of being in the US the longest hands down. Also, as far as we can tell, that chunk of the family came here from England in the mid-1700s. Vastly different from my parternal grandmother's family who didn't come here from the Azores until the 1920's.
