Photo of the Day for 03/27/16: Balancing Act

Photo of the Day for 03/27/16: Balancing Act

In August of 2014 we spent a few days in a cabin in the Mineral King area of Sequoia National Mark. Mineral King is very remote. There are pockets of bits of generator-produced electricity, but otherwise everything is propane, if anything at all. The only route into Mineral King by car is a long slog (~90 minutes) up a ~one lane mountain road that isn't even paved in some parts. And that was after driving all the way to Sequoia. Anyhow, we had a nice time and enjoyed exploring, though the elevation was rough for all of us. On one of our hikes that took us into a designated wilderness area I spotted this grasshopper balancing on some grass.

Photo of the Day of 03/24/16: Wet Wheel

My Uncle Billy likes to make all sorts of things, and one of the things he does is repurpose old items and create something new from them. One project of his recently has been making these decorative windmills/weather vanes out of old bicycle tires. He made this one for S. for his birthday and it lives in our garden oscillating in the wind while the wheel turns. I captured this right after it rained last week.

When we were making our first (failed) attempt to get to Bader Pass in Yosemite back in January we stopped to adjust our tire chains on our way out of the valley and S. spotted a coyote across the street. I have shared one photo of it before, and here is another.

Shooting the plants in the backyard last month I noticed this leaf that had a curious circle taken out of it. I liked the selectiveness of it and it leant itself to some great detail.

I shot this when we were on a bike ride at Coyote Hills last October. We had had a really, really dry year and the hills out there were awfully crispy. I liked the way this dry brush looked with the contrasting blue and grey/cloudy sky.

Last year Matilda gave me cuttings from her bearded iris plants. I planted them and I got a couple blooms last year, but this year they are going stronger. This one in the front yard just opened up today and then it rained. On first look you may not notice this part of the flower, and peeking inside provides an interesting perspective.

Photo of the Day for 03/18/16: Brush Rabbit

Peter and I spent some time in Half Moon Bay at the state beach on New Year's Day. We were walking along the trail back to the parking lot a bit after sunset and we heard rustling in the bushes. We could barely see what was there, but I grabbed a picture of it. It was this tiny brush rabbit. I had to shoot this at 1/8 handheld, with my ISO bumped way up, so it is not the sharpest, but it is not bad and I like that I got anything at all, plus this rabbit is super-cute!

Photo of the Day for 03/16/16: Yellow Jacket in Profile

I went out in the backyard today to take some pictures of some of our blossoming plants and noticed a number of yellow jackets flying around some old wooden chairs out there. L. has been complaining about the yellow jackets outside and I can see why..there were a number of them. I shot them for a while and could see that they were eating the wood on the chairs. They are more skittish then bees on flowers so it was harder to get in close (and the likelihood that I will get stung is much higher), but I managed some good shots. I have been asked how close I get to get this detail. Today my body was within a foot of the yellow jackets, my camera lens even closer.

Photo of the day for 03/15/16: Farm Tortie

We have been visiting Ardenwood farm for just about nine years now. Over that time we have encountered a number of farm kitties who wander the farm freely and help keep the rodent population under control. When L. and I were there last month we spotted this gorgeous long-haired tortie. As you may know, I love torties and have three of them. This one is a beauty and she was quietly wandering and hunting in the sheep field.

The first day we were in Yosemite in January it was sprinkling off and on with all the fabulous mists all over the place. I shot this near the Lower Yosemite Falls trail as the rain broke and the sky was clearing.

I really love egrets and that is one of the reasons I enjoy visiting Coyote Hills. I shot this one of an egret fishing in the marsh while we were there one a bike ride in October of last year.

When we were at The Butchart Gardens in 2013 L. rode the carousel there. It is enclosed and I shot this of the window in the ceiling above the carousel. I like the contrast between the sharp, straight lines of the metal and the softer, curved lines of the trees.

Photo of the Day for 03/09/16: A Mighty Bee

Photo of the Day for 03/09/16: A Mighty Bee

In August of 2013 we did an eight day trip of Seattle, Vancouver, and Victoria. We flew to Seattle, drove to Vancouver, spent four days there, took the ferry to Vancouver Island and spent two days in Victoria and surrounds and then back to Seattle for another couple days. After our ferry trip and before driving into Victoria we visited The Butchart Gardens which really was quite intriguing and beautiful. I was thrilled by all the bees present and spent a decent amount of time shooting them. I am getting ready to show a different shot of this bee in the PhotoCentral show and have shown that print at the FCAC in 2014. In getting my submission ready for the PC show I found this alternate shot. It is not as sharp as the one I am showing, but I am liking it.

Photo of the Day for 03/07/16: Early Spring Trees on the Lake

Photo of the Day for 03/07/16: Early Spring Trees on the Lake

Last April we went to Tahoe City for a few days. It had snowed prior to our arrival and it was a lovely mix of winter and spring while we were there. There was some snow around the lake, in random patches and places. On our first day there we walked down the path by the lake near where we were staying in Sunnyside and explored the beach area. I shot this at that time. It was nearing later afternoon and it was really blue between the sky and the water. I shot this mostly for the trees and and I like how the lake and mountains in the background create some texture and interesting variation in in color.

Last April we went to Tahoe for a few days and on our way to Tahoe City we stopped at the SnoPark at Donner Summit so the kids could play in the snow. It had just snowed a day or two prior and it was fantastic and powdery and the kids had so much fun and so did we. I shot some of the snow with my macro lens and I am enjoying the detail and patterns in this one.

Photo of the Day for 03/04/16: Blooming Orange

Last March we rode the Niles Canyon Train from Sunol to Niles then back to Sunol. We really enjoy riding the train through Niles Canyon and spring is a particularly lovely time of year to go as the wildflowers are in bloom. While we saw lots of poppies on the train ride I was not able to really get any good shot of them, but when we returned to our car I saw that the ground near the parking lot was covered in poppies and the light was low enough to afford some decent shots of them.
