Photo of the Day for 03/16/16: Yellow Jacket in Profile

I went out in the backyard today to take some pictures of some of our blossoming plants and noticed a number of yellow jackets flying around some old wooden chairs out there. L. has been complaining about the yellow jackets outside and I can see why..there were a number of them. I shot them for a while and could see that they were eating the wood on the chairs. They are more skittish then bees on flowers so it was harder to get in close (and the likelihood that I will get stung is much higher), but I managed some good shots. I have been asked how close I get to get this detail. Today my body was within a foot of the yellow jackets, my camera lens even closer.

A number of the blossoms on our blueberry plant have progressed to the next stage and we can see the fruit forming. I love watching this process. I shot this of the forming blueberries yesterday.

Photo of the Day for 03/18/16: Brush Rabbit

Peter and I spent some time in Half Moon Bay at the state beach on New Year's Day. We were walking along the trail back to the parking lot a bit after sunset and we heard rustling in the bushes. We could barely see what was there, but I grabbed a picture of it. It was this tiny brush rabbit. I had to shoot this at 1/8 handheld, with my ISO bumped way up, so it is not the sharpest, but it is not bad and I like that I got anything at all, plus this rabbit is super-cute!

White tailed kites are very fun and interesting to watch and I had the opportunity to watch this one fly around and hunt at Coyote Hills when we were out on a bike ride there in late December of 2014.

Last year Matilda gave me cuttings from her bearded iris plants. I planted them and I got a couple blooms last year, but this year they are going stronger. This one in the front yard just opened up today and then it rained. On first look you may not notice this part of the flower, and peeking inside provides an interesting perspective.
