Photo of the Day for 01/20/16: Surface Patterns

I really enjoy the patterns that form on bodies of water, particularly those with rocks close beneath the surface. Close-up, the water so so very different than what it looks like from even a few feet away. Looking at Lake Helen at the base of Mt. Lassen in its entirety is to experience a sea of blue. The minerals in the water make it very blue. However, when you get close and stare down into the water you see instead the interplay of the color of the rocks with the movement of the water and you see something more like today's photo. I shot this when we were in Lassen National Park in July. We have scrambled down to Lake Helen and were able to wade in it a bit. It is very rocky and cold. It is frozen and/or covered in snow much of the year and is apparently the snowiest place in California. I shot this at a fairly high shutter speed with a macro lens.
